Harvey Weinstein has already pleaded not guilty to five sex-crimes charges in New York, and now he faces charges of rape and sexual assault in Los Angeles as well. On Monday, as Weinstein’s trial commenced in New York, Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey’s office also hit Weinstein with four charges—forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by force, and sexual battery by restraint—which she detailed in a press conference Monday. Harvey Weinstein has denied all allegations of nonconsensual sex; if convicted, Lacey said, he would face up to 28 years in prison for these charges.

Weinstein allegedly forced his way into the first woman’s hotel room before raping her; the next evening, he allegedly assaulted the second accuser at a hotel suite. Both accusers told at least one other person about their assaults in 2013, and both reported the alleged crimes to the police in 2017. Prosecutors are requesting that bail be set at $5 million.

Lacey created L.A.’s sex-crimes task force during the autumn of 2017, when Hollywood #MeToo allegations had first begun to surface. This is, to date, the first case to move toward prosecution. During the press conference, Lacey confirmed that eight women have come forward to report assaults from Weinstein. Two of them are the cases now being prosecuted, and three fell outside of the statute of limitations, and thus did not move forward. Lacey said the District Attorney’s Office will continue to investigate the remaining three.

In a regarding Monday’s charges, Lacey said, “We believe the evidence will show that the defendant used his power and influence to gain access to his victims and then commit violent crimes against them. I want to commend all the victims who have come forward and bravely recounted what happened to them. It is my hope that all victims of sexual violence find strength and healing as they move forward.”
